How Long Does It Take For Invisalign® To Show Results?

Invisalign®️ braces have come as a breath of fresh air to people seeking an alternative treatment to metal braces. For a long time, metal braces dominated the industry, and most adults were not excited about getting the orthodontic treatment. Our dentist’s office has Invisalign braces for anyone who discreetly wishes to straighten their teeth.

Even though Invisalign and metal braces operate under the same principle, some people think that Invisalign treatment takes much longer or it’s ineffective. However, this is far from the truth. Invisalign has been around for decades, and there are over 5 million smiles can attest to its efficacy.

Let’s get to unpack some of the key things about Invisalign, including how long the treatment takes.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Orthodontic issues such as crooked, spaced, and misaligned teeth can come with various problems. You can battle indigestion, jaw pain, headaches, poor oral hygiene, etc. It would help if you had Invisalign treatment to align your teeth and restore your bite.

But for Invisalign to restore your bite and tooth functionality, it needs to move your teeth to the desired positions. They employ the same mechanism as traditional braces. The main difference is the dental appliance used.

Unlike metal braces, Invisalign uses a set of customized trays to correct orthodontic problems. The customized trays are made using a digital tooth impression taken by our dentist near you during your initial consultation.

Our dentist will take a digital image, and the image is uploaded to a computer, which creates a 3D image of your teeth. The 3D image is used to create the trays and treatment plan. What’s more, Invisalign technology can allow you to view how your teeth will look when the treatment is complete.

Once the trays are ready, you will 3-5 trays at a go. You will wear each aligner for approximately ten days before discarding them and then wearing the next one in the series. You will continue with this trend until you complete the treatment. You will need to wear them for 20 hours every day to get the desired results.

The aligners are snug, and so they will apply gentle pressure on your teeth, which is enough to move your teeth in small but recognizable movements.

How Long Does Invisalign Take Overall?

No one enjoys wearing trays every day, so it is understandable when you want to know when you can stop wearing them. It takes under two years for most people with Invisalign to see results. At times, the results might even begin showing as early as six months.

But we all know that each smile is different, and it might take more or less time depending on:

  • The type of spacing or occlusion you have
  • Your age
  • How compliant you are with the Invisalign treatment plan

How Can I Get the Best Invisalign Results?

You might need to adhere to certain instructions until you complete your treatment to get the best results. You also need a mental shift since the bulk of the work comes from your end. That’s where metal braces and Invisalign differ. You cannot “cheat” while wearing metal braces since they are fastened to the teeth. Invisalign is removable, so you can get them out and put them back on at your convenience.

Anyway, some take advantage of the following tips:

  • Mind the Hours

As mentioned earlier, you have the choice to remove Invisalign aligners at your convenience. But, you will still have to wear them for 20 hours each day. If you wear them for less than 20 hours, they will not deliver as expected.

  • Practice Excellent Oral Hygiene

You might need to clean your teeth more than expected since the aligners need to be worn on clean teeth. Therefore, whenever you remove them to eat, remember to brush your teeth before you put them back on to avoid the development of tooth decay and gum disease.
So, if you are going to school or work, carry a travel toothbrush.

  • Please Don’t Eat or Drink While Wearing Them

If you eat with the aligners, you can damage them since they are not designed to withstand the chewing force. Drinking any liquid other than pure water will also discolor or damage them.

  • Improve Your Diet

Your teeth are nourished by what you eat. So eat tooth-friendly foods that are rich in calcium and vitamin D.
